Why Locke Family Law Exists

Locke Family Law is a Brisbane family and divorce legal practice, founded and led by Natalie Locke, a lawyer with 15+ years of experience handling high-conflict family and divorce law matters, including coercive control, domestic violence, and complex property settlements.

By the time most clients reach out, they have genuinely tried everything to settle. Direct negotiation, mediation, or offering more than feels fair. The other party simply won't let go. They are exhausted from trying to reason with someone who can't be reasoned with.

Locke Family Law was built exactly for those moments and with one clear goal in mind: To get clients through what may be the hardest legal process of their lives, out the other side, and on to whatever comes next.

WHAT WORKING WITH US LOOKS LIKE

Family law feels overwhelming in part because most people have no idea what is actually going to happen next. Here is what the process looks like at Locke Family Law, from the first contact through to resolution.

01

The first contact

Every matter starts with a phone call or email to the team. There is no expectation that you have everything figured out before you get in touch; you just need to make contact. Our team will follow up promptly and help you get a strategy session booked with our principal lawyer, Natalie Locke.

02

The strategy session

The $495 strategy session is where the real work begins. It is one hour with Natalie, where she will look at your situation clearly, identify what you are dealing with legally and practically, and build the foundations of a strategy for how to move your matter forward. You leave with a clear picture of your situation, an honest assessment of what resolution will realistically involve, and a plan for what comes next. There is no obligation to proceed beyond the session itself.

03

Building the strategy

For clients who choose to proceed, Natalie refines and implements the strategy built in the session. Before any significant step is taken, you receive written advice setting out your options, the likely costs, and the recommended approach. Nothing moves forward without your understanding of what is happening and why it is being recommended.

04

Managing your legal matter

Locke Family Law manages every significant decision point throughout the matter, including negotiations with the other side, document drafting, financial disclosure, engaging experts where needed, and court representation where necessary. The Locke team supports you across the day-to-day and ensures you are followed up promptly and kept informed throughout the process.

05

How we keep you informed

You are kept informed at every significant stage of your matter and will always receive written advice following key decisions or events. If something important happens, the Locke team is in touch. You are never left wondering where things stand or what happens next.

06

Your resolution

The goal throughout is to move your matter toward resolution without running it longer than necessary. Once a matter resolves, Locke Family Law ensures you understand exactly what has been agreed, what it means practically, and what you may need to do next.

As a seasoned litigator, she ensures strong, effective representation and optimal outcomes in the most difficult situations.

Multiple income sources

International companies and trusts

Deceased estates

Bankruptcies

This combination equips her with a distinctive skill set, which makes her a standout choice for high-net-worth clients who have experienced, or are accused of, domestic violence.

Background

Natalie Locke did not plan to become a family lawyer

Natalie was the first in her family to finish university, with a clear idea of where that was heading: policy work and a ministerial office. It was the kind of career that looked good on paper. After graduating from the Queensland University of Technology, she spent a few years as a criminal lawyer and a children's advocate, because that was what she'd always been told being a "real lawyer" meant.

She moved into policy and ministerial work, as a senior policy advisor to the Minister for Police, Corrective Services, and Emergency Services. What she found was that she got more out of helping individuals and working on law reform than she did out of policy. So she returned to law. The years that followed were spent in senior positions at well-known firms on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane, acting for high-net-worth clients on complex property settlements, high-value divorce settlements, trusts, and intricate financial structures.

After volunteering for several years at Women's Legal Service Queensland, Natalie was offered an advice role with the Service. Within months, she became their high-risk DV solicitor and one of the only practitioners there with the financial depth to handle complex property matters alongside coercive control and domestic violence work in the same file. While she did not set out to build that combination, the work found her, and it became the foundation of everything Locke Family Law does now.

Alongside her legal practice, Natalie has contributed her legal and policy expertise to organisations including the Commission for Children and Young People.

The backbone of Locke Family Law

Locke Family Law is a deliberately small practice. We are supported by Rhiannon, who works closely across the practice.

Because we regularly act in high-risk domestic and family violence matters, we limit the amount of publicly available information about team members. This is a conscious, safety-focused decision.

Rhiannon will always ensure clients are followed up with and responded to promptly. She is known within the practice for her attention to detail, calm presence and steady support through complex and emotionally demanding matters.
